On 30th November 2003 the two towns were twinned by their representatives signing a respecitve agreement. Bearing in mind the history, both partners are willing to take up the good and fruitful traditions of cooperation that have united Germans and Czechs for centuries.
The idea to get twinned with a Czech town arose from the spirit of good neighbourhood and cooperation across frontiers on the way to a unified Europe.
With this partnerschip, both towns Kadan and Aue want to lay the basis for a cooperation founded on reciprocity and to deepen the understanding between the people of both towns, thus contributing to the coexistence of people in the Czech-German border region under the roof of a common European house.
Both towns see the partnership as an opportunity for the communities, social organisations and associations to cooperate, and to improve the contacts among people to both sides of the border, in particular with focus on the fields of tourism, information and marketing, cultural exchange, education, schools and sports, and youth projects. Furthermore the cooperation in such areas as preservation of historical monuments and protection of the environment, development of infrastructure, exchange of small businesses and traders as well as cooperation of associations and congregations is to be promoted.
